But first Alaska

A small ship nimbly plies the waters of the Inside Passage between Juneau, Admiralty Island, and the fjords containing miniature worlds of ancient ice that recede to fresh, bare lands where life prospers.

Where It Began

All things must begin somewhere. Alaska has been many things for many people over the years. For some, it was a place where they hoped to find their fortune in gold; for others, perhaps a place to make something of themselves by providing for the miners. Gold is certainly part of the history of Alaska and the expansion into what became the western states of the United States.

Times have changed, thankfully. The real story of Alaska should not be centered on those who came seeking riches in the earth, but instead on the primal beauty of a place that is still rugged and raw. A place where you can see the power of nature at work, shaping the land and sea. Where the truest wealth is showcased in the vibrancy of its life.

Alaska was here long before we put the label on a map. Long before that, many Indigenous peoples called this land home—and continue to do so today.

The Inside Passage

I have always been fascinated by islands. Places where mountains and sea come together and create somewhere life takes hold. The Inside Passage of Alaska looks to embody all the things I love about mountainous islands: rich forests, abundant sea life, mist and fog, sheltered coves, and calm waters.

A nursery for life.

I love the emotional and almost spiritual idea embodied in this quote from John Muir about Alaska. Muir wrote of visiting Alaska as an experience that leaves you forever changed.

AdventureSmith Explorations has its roots in this fertile and rich land of the north. Fortunately, I work for this small and knowledgeable company. Todd Smith, president and founder, returns to Alaska often with his family and has spent many years exploring there.

I have the unique opportunity to travel to the beginnings of things for AdventureSmith Explorations with my husband, Jonathan, and see what so inspired Todd and many of my coworkers. In each of them, there is a love for the deep and natural places of the world. Their enthusiasm for this destination has inspired me to take this journey.

Hot August Escape

Generally, I wouldn’t choose a cold-water place as a personal destination. I love to swim and snorkel. But because this place has been such an inspiration to so many friends, family members, and coworkers, I am excited to make this summer escape to a cooler climate in the north.

One place I keep thinking about when looking at photos of the Inside Passage is the San Juan Islands of Washington. We took an anniversary trip there, and it absolutely blew my mind and stole my heart. It will always feature in my memories as one of the best trips Jonathan and I have taken together. There was misty rain, sun, forests, rocky coves, and very early morning ferry rides.

So maybe I do sometimes choose a colder-water destination?
